Radio Frequency (RF) welding of PVC materials was discovered almost accidentally in the 1940’s when it was noticed that some radar transmitters and high power short-wave radio stations were melting certain plastics placed nearby. Further work quickly delivered an industrial application for welding of PVC as the material could very rapidly be melted and cured whilst being held in place by suitable tooling.
Relco produced its first RF welding machines in the autumn of 1969 for a London based furniture manufacturer. This gave the fledgling business the capital and confidence to develop what became an industry-leading range of machinery which gained an international reputation for high quality, innovative design and value for money. Relco launched a new range of compact RF systems: welders, dryers and induction generators from portable 500W equipment through to 50kW industrial machinery for the automotive sector.
In the late 1970’s the first consumer product utilizing RF technology was developed and marketed – The Relco Track Cleaner for model railways. This product was demonstrated on the BBC programme “Tomorrows World” consequently became hugely popular between model railway enthusiasts within Europe, North America and Australia.
During the early 1980’s induction sealing of bottles, jars & containers started to become widely adopted and in 1984 Relco launched its own range of cap sealing machinery which was among the first in the world to use a compact integrated solid-state power supply. Once again, innovative design, reliability and value led to rapid growth in sales and Relco was soon supplying equipment to a global marketplace.
Relco crossed the millennium under new management bringing increased investment in research & development and many new ideas. In a short time a revolutionary new concept was brought to life,
‘capless induction sealing’ which delivers the advantages of induction sealing to applications where a screw-thread closure is not used. With its own compact induction power supply (the P800), a unique approach to induction sealing head designs and the patented Punch&Seal system, Relco has consistently delivered custom solutions to challenging applications from customers across the world.
